Eyeball to eyeball in a hostile neighbourhood

Article Abstract:

The chances of an Israeli-Palestinian peace have decreased with a Likud-led government. The delaying of the agreement on Hebron has had the effect of postponing 4greement on the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These remain the Palestinian refugees, water rights, final borders, Palestinian sovereignty, and the future of Jerusalem. Drawing out the Hebron talks is welcome to the Likud, since they are rather unwilling to reconsider their absolutist positions on these issues. Foreign powers recognize that peace in the Middle East may not be as near as previously thought.

Blocking Bibi's bid for power

Article Abstract:

Benjamin Netanyahu has not been as successful in revamping the structure of the executive offices in Israel as he may have liked. His goals have included redesigning the Prime Minister's functions to be more like a president's and diverting Defense Ministry powers to a proposed National Security Council. Reasons for his lack of success have included the low numbers of political backers within the Knesset, the Bar-On affair, and political success of his rivals during critical negotiations.

Israel's political Houdini

Article Abstract:

Benjamin Netanyahu's government has reached its second year in power in Israel. His administration has been through scandals, resignations, and the perception that the government was failing. However, Netanyahu has survived and will finish his term. Some have suggested that changes in Israeli attitudes towards the peace process, removal of party rivals, and his emergence as a statesman of substance have helped him flourish in 1998.
