Falling through the cracks: care of the chronically mentally ill in the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

Germany, the US and the UK have faltered at developing adequate community-based services for people with chronic mental illness. The three countries have set up markedly different health care systems. The US relies on the private sector, the UK on its national health service and Germany on a mixed private and public system. However, all three have failed to provide community-based mental health care, though for varying reasons. Making mental health a high national priority is thus more important for the chronically mentally ill than how the health care system is structured.

Home care in old age: a lost cause?

Article Abstract:

Denmark and the UK have succeeded better than Germany and the US in making home care available for the frail elderly. Differing aims and policy parameters contributed to the four systems' varying results. The Danes and British relied on a general expansion of services and on home nursing as a permanent basis for home care whereas the Germans and Americans viewed home care as little more than an inexpensive alternative to hospital care. An international trend toward increased home care is doubtful in the near future.
