The Challengers Boys and Girls Club established by the social activist Lou Dantzler in South Central Los Angeles instills discipline and values in the minds of young people. It offers homework assistance, job placements, leadership training programs, and recreational activities for its members. With the generous help of various business firms, it has transformed from an unknown small group into a nationally recognized organisation. Guest lectures by the former USA Pres George Bush and several television programs have given its image a major boost.

Crackin' down on crack and crime

Article Abstract:

The police department in Houston has undergone a revamping, especially after 1970s, when it had earned a reputation of being unusually tough on the minorities. Several remedial measures have been taken and the police have been asked to go slow in matters relating to African-Americans. Moreover, the police in Houston are now making use of the technological advancements to pinpoint their activities in more sensitive areas. Similar measures have also been undertaken in other states. Community policing has also gained in importance.
