Article Abstract:

The Director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought in London, UK, gives his personal assessment of the power of the polls and how, in the Middle East, free and fair elections have not made much headway and how the cancellation of the Palestinian election has done little to bolster faith in democracy. He argues that while Israel may be the only country in the Middle East to enjoy the right to freely elect their governments, this freedom has actually turned out to be a bad thing for Israeli culture as a whole, producing governments that are increasingly right wing, which exacerbate rather than ameliorate the conflict with the Palestinians, and which take Israel further and further away from the image that was created by the country's founders of Israel as a secular pragmatic Zionist state.

Security or peace?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the upcoming elections in Israel and the issues that be at the forefront of candidate's agendas. It is suggested that the main issues in the Israeli election will be foreign and security policy and while the agenda of the security candidates will be relatively clear, it is questioned whether any peace candidate will be able to come up with a peace option that is able to convince the voters.
