France: the Right triumphs

Article Abstract:

The Socialist Party went down to defeat in the French parliamentary elections of Mar 1993, leading to a government with a left-wing president and right-wing Parliament. The right-wing victory has not, however, been accompanied by an equivalent change in the broader political scene, since not many of the Left's traditional supporters seem to have flocked to the mainstream Right. The conservative government's handling of the economy will determine whether the Socialists' electoral defeat has long-term meaning for their party.

Reform or protect

Article Abstract:

The French economy is performing well since the monetary union and the euro came into existence in 1999, but there is a sense of discontent related to the feeling that the 'modele francais', which brought together Gaullists and Socialists, is at an end. The French view globalization as a threat and the economic agenda for the presidential elections in 2007 will depend on whether the public chooses the need for protection or a complete overhaul of the system.

France: punishing the Socialists

Article Abstract:

France's regional and local elections in Mar, 1992, resulted in the worst loss for the Socialist Party since 1968. Both the extreme right National Front and the two environmental parties, Les Verts and Generation Ecologie, took votes from the Socialists. The mainstream Right benefited by such defection. President Francois Mitterrand may have to distance himself from his Socialist Party in order to continue his political career.
