Freedom and the environment

Article Abstract:

An analysis of nondemocratic systems shows evidence of the connection between government and ecology, especially in the former Eastern bloc states and China. There is an agreement among scholars that environmental degradation in the Soviet Union resulted fromclosed Communist societies. Democracies are better at protecting the environment for five reasons, individual rights and the open marketplace of ideas, regime responsiveness, political learning, and internationalism and open markets. The states have to work to reinforce international norms for sustainable development.
