From green to brown: the Australian federal election of March 1996

Article Abstract:

The Australian Greens failure to capitalize on the disillusionment with the Labor government resulted in their defeat to the Liberal-National coalition in the 1996 federal elections. The coalition had relegated environment to a low third position as an election issue. The political defeat of the Greens points to the political unsuavy of passionate campaigners and their disunity as a political force. However, the victory of Bob Brown can provide the Greens with a national platform. A Democrats-Greens alliance will help attain common objectives of social justice and environmental concerns.

Acting globally, thinking locally? Prospects for a global environmental movement

Article Abstract:

Most people in most countries find it hard to think globally about environmental issues. It seems that the types of concern people have about the environment are, to a significant level, a reflection of their knowledge. The most highly educated people in the most highly developed countries tend to have the greatest understanding of global environmental issues, while the less well educated people generally focus on local environmental problems. Environmental movement organizations can only compensate for this to a certain extent.
