Generous with our uniqueness: forging new directions for African-American women in the arts

Article Abstract:

It is difficult for people of color to advance in the arts; moreso if they are women. For black female classical musicians the problems transcend sexism and racism. They are compelled to perform like the West European elites who popularized the art. There are also very few famous Afro-American female classical musicians. However, black females excel in popular music and modern dance. Although discrimination persists in the film and television industry, its impact is less than what the stage artists experience. Unless education of future audiences, artists and decision makers is properly introduced black women will find it hard to gain prominence in the arts.

Dislocations: dialogue of disparate visions

Article Abstract:

The New York Museum of Modern Art hosts an exhibit of contemporary conceptual art which aims to stimulate the viewers' responses to the artists' video installations. Entitled 'Dislocations,' the exhibit showcases seven artists whose works are avant garde and represent jarring visual images of underlying messages. Two Afro-American artists, David Hammons and Adrian Piper, pit their talents against their colleagues and come up with remarkable works which reflect their Afro-American experiences. Another artist, Chris Burden, stirs racial sensitivities through his work, 'The Other Vietnam Memorial.'
