Germany: moving towards a new Ostpolitik?

Article Abstract:

Germany had to admit by 1992 that the funds poured into the Soviet Union as a result of the Treaty of Moscow had not done any good. Gorbachev was gone, the old Soviet Union dissolved and what remained was threatened by economic collapse. A new Ostpolitik or eastern policy was needed. A German problem in its relations with Russia and other former Eastern block countries was the possibility of uncontrolled economic migration. This problem was acute for Germany in view of Article 16(2) in its Basic Law giving political refugees the right of asylum. This was modified in Dec 1992.

Choices change for Germany

Article Abstract:

The German people are faced with the choice of which city will become the next capital. European unification since the Cold War has changed the future course for the country. The British media hesitates to recognize the change in Germany's political position following reunification. Among the changes that followed reunification was the status of the Federal Republic as completely sovereign.
