Germany raises no-first-use issue at NATO meeting

Article Abstract:

A meeting for foreign ministers involved in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been held, and the new coalition government of Germany has tackled the issue of no-first-use in relation to nuclear policy. The German move has surprised the US. Meanwhile, Canada has called for a re-examination of the policy of NATO, while France and the United Kingdom oppose making changes to NATO's policy, arguing that uncertainty increases the effectiveness of the policy.

Indian, Pakistani nuclear tests elicit condemnation at CD

Article Abstract:

The nuclear tests conducted by India and Pakistan dominated discussions at the May 1998 Conference on Disarmament. Participants condemned the tests and claimed that these violated the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. India and Pakistan were also accused of threatening the non-proliferation regime. However, countries such as Colombia and Egypt directed their criticisms at nuclear weapon states for failing to prove their commitment to disarmament.
