Heroines and harridans

Article Abstract:

Female warriors and leaders are a common occurrence in Asian history and tradition. Numerous women politicians have exercised power and influence during the second half of the 20th century in China, Vietnam, India, Japan, the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Their rise to leadership nearly always inspired great hope for the future of their countries. Unfortunately, they mostly proved as unsuccessful as their male colleagues in conquering their nations' economic and social problems. This has led to proportionately greater disappointment among those whose hopes they raised.

East Asian security: a Philippine perspective

Article Abstract:

East Asian security is relatively stable as increasing economic growth and integration give people and countries more incentives to cooperate peacefully. Increasing democracy is reducing the ideological and authoritarian nature of most govts in the region. The South China Sea is the likeliest flash-point, thanks to strong competing interests and China's aggressive pursuit of control. China is also a leader in an emerging local arms race. Southeast Asian unification is the best route to peace and growth.

So far, so good: political change and the Asia crisis

Article Abstract:

The Asian currency crisis has brought little political change to the region. Political turmoil is possible in a number of Asian countries, but the public will most likely express itself in marches and small riots. However, it is apparent that the cause of Asian economic crisis is the unhealthy relationship between business and politics. Political change could occur if the armed forces leadership in these Asian countries took an active role in the region's political economy.
