Hungary's Catholicism: a slow resurrection

Article Abstract:

The Hungarian Catholic Church is seriously weakened from years of Communist suppression. The clergy is ageing, most religious orders were suppressed and church property was nationalized during the Communist period. Believers are hoping to open more Catholic schools, educate priests and reclaim Church property, but the tasks that need doing outstrip the resources available. The Vatican's 'Ostpolitik' and a papal visit in 1991 provided some encouragement. A Catholic renewal might moderate nationalistic divisiveness.
