Identity, immigration, and liberal democracy

Article Abstract:

Contemporary liberal democracies, especially in Western Europe, face a major challenge in integrating Muslim immigrants as citizens of pluralistic societies. The dilemma of immigration and identity ultimately converges with the larger problem of the valuelessness of postmodernity, that is, the rise of relativism has made it impossible for postmodern people to assert positive values for which they stand, and therefore the kinds of shared beliefs they demand as a condition for citizenship.

The imperative of State-building

Article Abstract:

Weak or failed states are at the root of many serious global problems, from poverty and AIDS to drug trafficking and terrorism, to the failure of democratic government itself. State building, which consist the creation of new governmental institutions and the strengthening of existing ones has become a crucial issue for the world community.

Liberalism versus state-building

Article Abstract:

It is observed that state-building under the control of a central authority, and other state institutions are at cross-roads writhe liberalism i.e. the liberal rule of law and democracy, that limit's the central state's authority to coerce by ensuring that the rules of power reflect popular will.
