Immigration policy in a global economy

Article Abstract:

The growth of a global economic system and other changes have changed the state's regulatory role and its autonomy. This is particularly apparent in immigration policymaking and implementation, with the huge need for legal innovations consistent with the forming of a global economy. States increasingly have to confront a range of immigration rights and obligations, including universal human rights, and many aspects of immigration and refugee policy are linked with EU legal competence. Many governments are unable to address some major issues because of the growing number of transnational processes.

From exports to equity: the future of the Chilean economy

Article Abstract:

Poverty alleviation remains the major challenge to Chile's future economic reform, after the rapid economic growth engineered by the structural adjustment policies of the military regime during 1974-1989. Political changes, characterized by greater stability and increasing democratization, accompanied the success of the economic reforms, leading to increases in foreign investments and exports. The success of Chile's reform process and the evolution of its economy amidst democratic transition, can provide insights into the economic growth process in developing countries.

The new thinking on development

Article Abstract:

Professor Jagdish Bhagwati feels that democracy instead of being a hurdle in economic development, sees a strong link between democracy and economic development. He also accepts the falsifying of the old view that democracy is a handicap to development and the emergence of new thinking. Bhagwati also deals with the ideology, structure, and quality of democracy and the relation of democracy with markets.
