Indonesia, Islam, and the prospect for democracy

Article Abstract:

This article examines Indonesia's different religious movements and their interpretation of Islam. The author, maintaining the various interpretations are influencing the people's attitudes toward democracy, argues that modern Islamic theology, which holds various perspectives of the government's role, is a crucial aspect of Indonesian politics and cannot be ignored in political discourse and practice.

Indonesia's mild secularism

This article discusses the political ramifications of Islam in Indonesia. The author, arguing that Indonesia's 'mild secularism' is a strong example that Islam and democracy can coexist, maintains radical Islamists are creating conflict and the political parties must remain secular to prevent a political struggle.

A comparative approach to Islam and democracy

This article discusses the compatibility of democracy and Islam. The author argues that even though the two are able to coexist Islam is far greater than any political system, influencing and transcending all aspects of life.
