Intention and Impact: Canadians Reflec on their Votes

Article Abstract:

A study of Canadian public opinion determines that the percentage of Canadians who vote in federal elections declined from 75% in 1988 to 61% in 2000 and is expected to be 72% in 2004, and higher in Quebec. Older citizens considered that they were more likely to vote. and the population was split as to whether they considered that their votes would have any impact.

Opportunity Knocks for the Tories -- A Question of Timing and Advantage

Article Abstract:

The Progressive Conservative party and the Canadian Alliance merged in 2003 to form the Conservative Party of Canada. The new leader, Stephen Harper, has moved the right-wing party closer to the centre. The party is well-positioned going into the forthcoming election because of the sponsorship scandals in the governing Liberal party.
