Iraq denies UNSCOM access to suspect sites despite pledge

Article Abstract:

Iraq has on several occasions gone back on its pledge to allow the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) inspectors to examine suspected sites in Iraq. In the latest incident, Iraq has denied UNSCOM inspectors access to sites holding documents of banned weapons program by Iraq, on grounds of national security. The action violates Iraq's pledge to enter into a joint action program with UNSCOM to resolve disputes. Disagreements have surfaced over efforts to monitor the status of weapons programs in Iraq. Iraqi suggestions that UNSCOM give prior notice of inspections, fails to serve the purpose of monitoring.

Iraq blocks UNSCOM monitoring; Security Council calls for review

Article Abstract:

Iraq has announced its termination of all inspection privileges to the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) and the International Atomic Energy Agency on Oct 31, 1998. The UNSCOM was tasked to monitor suspected sites of prohibited weapons production such as nuclear and biological weapons. As early as Aug 5, 1998, all UNSCOM activities were stopped by Iraqi officials. Experts speculate that the decision may have been evoked by the UN Security Council's approval of a comprehensive review of Iraq's compliance with the UN disarmament resolutions.
