Judicial review and the Arab world

Article Abstract:

An investigation of the operation and limitations of constitutional courts in the Arab world gives a valuable insight into the development of judicial review in countries moving towards democracy. Judicial review is found very frequently in Arab countries, usually in the form of specialized constitutional courts. Judicial review is widely accepted in the Arab world, but only a few of the bodies responsible for judicial review are regarded as effective defenders of constitutionalism. There is growing democratic reliance on judicial review, but most of the constitutional documents of transitional countries show little awareness of the historic clash between constitutionalism and democracy.

Arab political pacts: An unlikely scenario

Article Abstract:

The discontent in the Arab world has failed to fuel effective political opposition and has not produced any powerful coalitions that would truly pose a threat to existing regimes nor was there a movement for fundamental political change within the country. Formally negotiated deals between authoritarian rulers and liberal opposition forces are unlikely to provide the path to change in the Arab world and true pacts will be formed only if the ruling apparatus perceive that their survival is no longer assured.

Chinese culture and political renewal

Article Abstract:

The president of the Republic of China, Lee Teng-hui, feels that political and economic reforms are mutually essential depending on the conditions and problems of each country. Lee argues that economic reform proceeded political reform in China. Political development, according to Lee, is a complex social phenomenon which involves all types of social organizations and forces, and is closely associated with cultural heritage. Lee considers the Republic of China's transition to democracy a steady development.
