Labor standards in US and EU preferential trading agreements

Article Abstract:

The development and enforcement of labor standards in the US and EU FTAs and non-reciprocal preferential trading agreements are discussed. The reasons why successive US administrations with widely different views on trade unions and labor standards have continued to include such provisions in trade agreements to an extent that they have now become a bipartisan component of the US trade agenda are also examined.

Towards sounder and fairer WTO retaliation: suggestions for possible additional procedural rules governing members' preparation and adoption of retaliatory measures

Article Abstract:

The possible amendments to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Understanding that could make retaliation fairer and sounder are presented. The proposed amendments would require Members to conduct a domestic notice-and-comment procedure before adopting a retaliatory measure to be submitted to the WTO for authorization.
