Latin America: beyond 'democratic consolidation.'

Article Abstract:

Analysts should not imagine that Latin America is a region of fully-developed democracies. Democracies in Latin American have come into existence without incorporating much change in the social and economic structures which were part of the previous authoritarian regimes. Assessment of the state of democracy in Latin American countries must involve a study of the degree of equality and of the system of property rights, and an assessment of the state and the rule of law. Structures which would reveal these factors when studied include local government, businesses and the judiciary.

Can the Middle East compete?

Article Abstract:

Economic reorientation of the Arab countries of the Middle East has become imperative in the wake of the changes in the world economy. The lack of a political will in the authoritarian regimes to initiate economic reform has made political liberalization a distant possibility. Conversely, in the absence of a democratic setup there has been no attempt at sustaining economic reform. Development of stock markets, restructuring of state enterprises and the encouragement of free competition is possible only in a democratic regime.

The East Asian prospect: a "recipe" for democratic development

Article Abstract:

Six lessons can be learned from East Asian democratic political development. These include the importance of leadership and institutions in the democratization process. The third and fourth are the importance of economic growth and establishing economic equity in facilitating democratization. The international arena also plays an important role in democratization which should take into account the particular history of a specific group of people.
