Making amends after communism

Article Abstract:

Eastern Europe has never been the same since 1989, when countries in the region began throwing off the yoke of communism. Since that time, many former communist countries have been trudging towards democracy, despite the various difficulties that lay in their path. Amidst this development, the issue of lustration, or the barring of communist collaborators from certain key government posts, in the Czech Republic has been criticized as contrary to democratic norms. However, a closer look would reveal that lustration is necessary to maintain democratic ideals and practices.

Venezuela: democracy hangs on

Article Abstract:

Much has been said about the weakness of Venezuela's democratic foundation. In the face of the country's rapid deterioration, politically and otherwise, it is ironic that Venezuela is still run by a democratic government. However, it is doubtful that this state of things will continue in the long run. Unless solutions can be found, Venezuela's democratic government would surely fall under the weight of economic, institutional and cultural problems.
