Fearing election fever

Article Abstract:

The preparations done by Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of Kazakhstan, to ensure a peaceful election in his country on December 4, in the light of chaos caused during elections in the various other parts of the former Soviet Union, is described. It is emphasized that while Kazakhstan ahs improved significantly over other countries in the region, a free and fair election would help this oil-rich country break away from the mismanaged and corrupted Central Asia.

Change abroad

Article Abstract:

Two contradictory foreign policy visions can be seen in the presidential elections in France, as adopted by the conservative Minister of the Interior Nicolas Sarkozy and the Socialist candidate Segolene Royal. Sarkozy advocates a radical change in French foreign affairs through a shift from prevalent negative, uncompromising positions toward pro-Americanism, while Segolene is likely to preserve the present foreign policy situation.

Turbulence ahead

Article Abstract:

Germany's President, Horst Kohler decided whether to exercise his power to dissolve the Bundestag following the vote of no confidence in Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's center-left coalition at the beginning of the elections. He argued that whichever option he takes either giving the approval to election or declining could be a challenge in the constitutional court, which would only prolong uncertainty.
