Fearing the worst

Article Abstract:

Nagorny Karabakh territory was the main reason for a bitter dispute between Armenians and Azerbaijanis. Since 1994, the dispute is quiet but unresolved, halted by a ceasefire agreement that followed a de facto Armenian victory on the ground and the deaths of some twenty-five thousand people, but its influence is continuing to ruin the entire region between the Caspian and Black Sea.

Eduard Shevardnadze was a waning but a wily political operator who as Soviet Union's foreign minister under President Mikhail Gorbachev played a key role in the end of the Cold War. For thirty years he was the sun in the solar system of Georgian politics.
