Managing structural adjustment

Article Abstract:

International financial institutions should use detailed data, analytical frameworks, institutional capacity and resources while implementing structural adjustment programs. Lack of proper program direction has led to worsening living conditions in low income African countries. New policy priorities call for a heterodox adjustment model to reflect different cultural and social circumstances, and incorporating a country's elite and important interest groups in policy making and implementation.

Averting the crash: economic institutions and financial sector soundness

Article Abstract:

It is important to have strong banks and financial institutions and failures of these in one country can impact the global economy. This fact has been recognized following the Southeast Asian economic crises of the 1990s. Economic instability can be caused by factors within an institution, politics, cultural and social context and natural disasters. These need to be recognized and strong banks are essential in developing and developed economies.

Balking at the numbers

Article Abstract:

An insight into the accelerating urbanization in the developing world, widening the gap between the rich and the poor is presented. The moral response to this situation by the development practitioners, the programs and policies that blame it largely on low levels of funding are questioned.
