Mediators for Transcaucasia's conflicts

Article Abstract:

Western governments, non-governmental organizations and international organizations must cooperate in leading an effort to mediate the inter-ethnic conflicts in the three Transcaucasian states of Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Thus far, preoccupation with the Bosnian conflict has delayed any international response to Transcaucasian problems. Leadership in mediation efforts is badly needed, if only as a sign of Western support for the fragile, democratically elected governments of the three Transcaucasian states. If overthrown, more authoritarian regimes would be sure to take their place.

Kyrgyzstan's slow progress to reform

Article Abstract:

Kyrgyzstan's parliamentary election in February 1995 was supposed to push the country on a new path of democracy after independence from the Soviet Union but the results were not on expected lines. The deteriorating living standard, the impoverished economy and the innumerable scandals have contributed to the political generation. The president does not enjoy his former comfortable position and cannot satisfy the critics and the people in general. Ironically his chances of winning the next presidential election are good.

Kyrgyzstan: secularism vs. Islam

Article Abstract:

Kyrgyzstan contains numerous ethnic groups, and the republic's president is encouraging national harmony to minimize ethnic tension, while supporting the national aspirations of the Kirgiz and cultural freedom for the other nationalities. The policy has enjoyed some success but ethnic unrest has not disappeared. The Kirgiz are Moslems and the danger of Islamic fundamentalism cannot be discounted. Economic problems are severe and the republic's stability depends largely on the economy.
