Medicine, morals, and public policy

Article Abstract:

Society has awarded increasing significance to the medical model during the 20th century. It applies the medical model to an increasing range of the mental and social conditions which form part of the human condition. This extension of the model is flawed. It blurs the distinction between sickness and wrongdoing, and it creates demands which medicine cannot satisfy. Society calls for government programs which can put right all the forms of sickness it sees within itself and establish a state of perfection. However, attempting to satisfy this demand through public policy would be futile.

Christian principles and public life

Article Abstract:

Christians have accepted the authority of government from the start, as is shown by the writings of Saint Paul. Government in turn is accountable to God. Government should recognise its limitations and not seek to take on responsibilities that should be carried out by the church, communities, families or individuals. Christians should seek harmony in their relations with civil society and the church, while keeping the two separate. The main role of the church is spiritual and it should refrain from becoming too involved in politics.

Public schools and the gnostic impulse

Article Abstract:

The belief that public schools must be used to address social problems has led to the degradation of public education. The failure of the public education systemwas caused by Gnostic teachers and principals as well as politicians who assumethat public schools can accomplish anything as long as it is properly funded. To remedy this, educators and public administrators are suggested to stop viewing public schools as an institution where social ills are primarily addressed but as an establishment where broad education can be attained.
