Myths and realities of the Latin American state

Article Abstract:

Most Latin American governments have embarked on economic policy reform programs that have resulted in some degree of macroeconomic stability, privatization of state-owned enterprises, decreased public expenditures and expanded tax bases. However, major economic problems such as high incidences of poverty and inequality remain. Latin American states should properly prioritize their goals, ensure that fiscal deficits are sustainable and embark on applicable revenue-generating mechanisms to improve its economy.

Latin America's populist revival

Article Abstract:

Latin American populism was deemed to have run its course by the 1980's as the region adopted far-reaching market reforms, however, new and strikingly diverse populist movements have returned to political prominence now. It is suggested that populism's revival in Latin American democracies are based on their institutional weaknesses and market insecurities that have led to different patterns of social and political mobilization.
