The politics of corruption in Latin America

Article Abstract:

Massive graft and corruption seem to have increasingly spread in Latin America during the past 20 years. Several reasons for this increase are cited. The increasing state interventionism, which gives politicians and bureaucrats control over vast resources, is seen as one reason. Others point to the recent introduction of neoliberal reforms, where bureaucrats gave out large portions of public property with limited transparency, as another likely reason. In addition, the wave of democratization which has swept over Latin America in the last 25 years, is seen to increase incentives for corruption.

Public opinion in new democracies: Latin America's smiling mask

Article Abstract:

Public opinion surveys in Latin American countries reveal that most Latin Americans prefer democracy over other forms of government and are ready to defend it against threats to its survival. This preference for democracy overshadows a general dissatisfaction with the current performance of democratic institutions and processes. Latin American democratization is unique to that area because of the socio-cultural elements that are intertwined with it.
