Public opinion in new democracies: where are postcommunist countries going?

Article Abstract:

Postcommunist countries as a whole are undergoing an asymmetric divergence from old communist politics. Central and Eastern European states are making progress towards achieving democracy while former Soviet states are nowhere near their neighbors in the democratization process. There is optimism that the democratization process will succeed as demand for undemocratic rule is low. Further contributing to this optimism is the help extended by the European Union in spurring the growth of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe.

Article Abstract:

Former communist countries in Eastern Europe have embraced liberal capitalism in the absence of an alternative to the communist tyranny. In other words, capitalism filled in a vacuum created with the rejection of communism, capitalism's bankrupt morality notwithstanding. Social problems such as poverty and corruption remain the same. What changed is that these problems are now seen as reform issues, rather than conditions inherent in class societies that will wither away under socialism, as Marxists thought.
