Nasty and brutish

Article Abstract:

The trade disputes which abound Europe and the US have a number of unpleasant disagreements and the pressures for both retaliation and protection which are growing on both sides of the Atlantic is discussed. The world in which trade negotiations and disputes could be resolved through direct dialogue between Europe, the US and few other big economies have vanished forever.

Testing times

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the failure of the US to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty that would have limited international nuclear weapons proliferation. The debate between Pres. Bill Clinton's administration and the Senate over the treaty is addressed, as well as the implications of this decision for international security and peace.

Failed missions, failed state

Article Abstract:

The Haiti case received more than five UN missions in ten years but is wracked by violence and under-development. A government of national reconciliation is temporarily installed to re-establish order, disarm the population, design development programme, and prepare for municipal, legislative and presidential elections in 2005.
