News and negotiations: latest Los Alamos security debacle prompts hearing on DOE

Article Abstract:

Congressional hearings were held in June on the Department of Energy's failure to prevent the loss of sensitive nuclear weapons information from a vault at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A top to bottom review of the nation's nuclear laboratories by the new National Nuclear Security Administration has been requested.

New DOE nuclear security organization begins work

Pres Clinton will nominate John Gordon to serve as director of the National Nuclear Security Administration and undersecretary of energy for nuclear security. Congress created the new administration following allegations of Chinese espionage in US nuclear laboratories.
