Nigeria: domestic crisis challenges international influence

Article Abstract:

The political confusion that has resulted from the refusal of Nigeria's military elite to allow a return to democracy has spelled doom for a successful international mediation. The current political situation has resulted in ethnic tension and violence and a sharp economic downturn. Theproblems in Nigeria can only be solved by an effective external intervention; otherwise, the paths of inaction and passivity adopted by the regime of General Sani Abacha will surely take Nigeria to a state of polarization and decay. The events leading up to the military coup are described.

Challenges of trans-national history: historians and the Nanjing atrocity

Article Abstract:

The 1937-1938 Rape of Nanking or, as it is called in the late 1990s, the Nanjing Massacre or Nanjing Atrocity, reflects East Asia's unmastered past. Historical controversies such as this, where innocent civilians are subjected to atrocities by invading troops, have had significant ramifications for East Asian international affairs. Within this context, writing a truly trans-national history of a major traumatic event such as the Nanjing Massacre is a challenge for historians as it is a significant move toward healing and reconciliation.

A Frankenstein in Lagos

Article Abstract:

Nigeria is currently under the greedy, despotic rule of Gen. Sani Abacha. The execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and some other men was his way of silencing the majority about his illegitimate rule. The global community must help out by enforcing an arms and trade embargo against Nigeria.
