Power struggle in post-Soviet Russia

Article Abstract:

Post-Communist Russia has not evolved a political or administrative system to replace the former single-party state. The military-industrial complex survived the collapse of the single-party state relatively intact, and it is trying to exploit popular discontent. Groups dissatisfied with reform have surfaced under various labels. The Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (UIE) is the voice of heavy industry in Russia. The Renewal Movement began on May 12, 1992 under the auspices of UIE and soon joined the Civic Union, a coalition calling itself the 'loyal opposition' to Boris Yeltsin.

Russia's choice: elections or revanche?

Article Abstract:

Various forces in Russia hope to postpone elections in Dec 1995 for the Duma and in June 1996 for the presidency, probably with disastrous consequences for democracy there. Russia has no experience with constitutional succession of leadership, and the current power structure favors an ailing president and his unpopular army of personal aides and advisors. These people have vast power and privilege, and neither they nor the newly wealthy business elite are likely to yield to potentially unfriendly election winners.

Getting Moscow on the move

Article Abstract:

Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin's medical problems even after his heart surgery and the fact that according to the Russian Constitution Yeltsin cannot run for reelection after July 2000 make his succession a pressing problem. Viktor Chernomyrdin, Gennadii Zyuganov, and Alexander Lebed are the three political figures who must be considered front-runners, but Yurii Luzhkov, the Mayor of Moscow, is a strong outside bet. Luzhkov's background is described.
