Race and the criminal justice system

Article Abstract:

There have been concerns over the seemingly unfair treatment of the law against Blacks. Statistics show that, while Blacks constitute only 12% of the nation's population, they are more likely to go to jail than whites who are more likely to get probation. They are 10 times more likely to be shot at by police officers, 18 times more likely to be wounded, and five times more likely to be killed when compared to whites. An increase in the number of juvenile offenders has also been noted and leaders of black communities are urging parents to be more active in their fight against criminality.

Race, power and the cry for D.C. statehood

Article Abstract:

The residents of Washington D.C. have for years demanded statehood for the capital of the United States. However, a change in the status of Washington D.C. remains elusive as ever. The statehood supporters feel that the problem lies in the federal government, which is not willing to change the existing system. They emphasize that the economy of the district would be strong enough to sustain the state of New Colombia, which if formed would be a predominantly black state.

The changing of the guard

Article Abstract:

Black activists and rights groups feel that the Republican-dominated Congress, headed by Newt Gingrich, will be a threat to affirmation programs and other social welfare programs. Republicans' opposition to programs favoring minorities and women won them white male conservatives' votes. Black activist groups such as NAACP plan to meet the challenge by educating black American voters and focusing on the economic prosperity of blacks.
