Religion and global affairs: disregarding religion

Article Abstract:

Journalists and political analysts have long discounted the influence of religion on global events. The role of religion in ethnic conflicts, for instance, is either downplayed or never mentioned in news accounts while overseas movements are often placed by political analysts into Enlightenment categories. It is argued that these attitudes can lead to misconceptions about the roots of conflicts and political orders abroad.

Religion and global affairs: secular states and religious oppositions

Article Abstract:

The emergence of religious activism has strengthened the influence of religion on international affairs. Religious activism rejects secularism in favor of socio-political institutions and practices anchored to religious values. Its growth is also attributed to the weakening of the state which created opportunities for religion to become the foundation for different visions of state and its relation with society.

Religion and global affairs: religious "militants for peace."(Symposium: The Impact of Religion on Global Affairs)

Article Abstract:

The violence committed by religious extremists has overshadowed the existence of other religious militant groups who are as committed as their violent counterparts to peacemaking efforts such as conflict resolution and human rights promotion. However, these groups are less understood, organized and funded due in part to the gaps that exist in studies on the fields of religion and international relations.
