Russian-Iran ties remain issue at Gore-Chernomyrdin meeting

Article Abstract:

Russian nuclear ties with Iran caused tension at meetings between US Vice President Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin in Sep 1997. Critics are forcing the Clinton administration to take a firmer line with Russia concerning claims that Russian technology transfers are aiding the Iranian ballistic missile programme. Russia denied that this illicit practice is occurring. The issue centres around Russian involvement in the Bushehr light water reactor project which the US claims will indirectly advance Iranian nuclear weapon acquisition.
