Social Democrats seek 'Phantasie' to put them in power

Article Abstract:

The future of the Social Democrats (SPD) in Germany is hard to predict. While the party's numbers in parliament are high and it governs most of Germany's states, it is internally divided and doing poorly in the court of public opinion. The party has been unable to articulate its policies with enough clarity after its loss of power in 1982. Moreover, former East Germans, unhappy about the failure of their financial situation to improve after reunification, have voted for the Party of Democratic Socialism rather than the SPD, which in turn is not sure which audience it should target.

Berlin Republic takes to arms

Article Abstract:

The crisis in Kosovo has led to questions concerning the role of Germany in Europe and has presented challenges to the new Social Democratic-Green coalition. The Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), protesting Germany's involvement in the NATO campaign, reflects divided public opinion between military action and diplomatic solutions. The government is also concerned with maintaining relations with Russia while stepping up its military crisis management.
