Taking aim at the ABM Treaty: THAAD and U.S. security
Article Abstract:
US efforts to develop a new generation of missile interceptor systems such as the Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system violate the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972. Proponents of THAAD argue that geopolitical changes during the Post-Cold War era stress the need for revising the ABM, specifically regarding provisions against the development of antimissile missile systems. However, the experience of the 1991 Persian Gulf War shows that collective international action was more effective in controlling regional conflicts, rather than advanced military equipment.
