Nuclear-weapon-free zones: coming of age?

Article Abstract:

The nuclear-weapon-free-zone (NFWZ) is a nonproliferation strategy with significant international impact in terms of regulating the spread and elimination of nuclear weapons. The Treaty of Tlateloco defines the nonproliferation conditions applicable to Latin American nations while the Treaty of Rarotonga provides the guidelines for the elimination of the nuclear threat in the South Pacific regions. The NFWZ are valuable measures because they provide an alternative for governments who refuse to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty because of perceived discriminatory practices.

High noon for the NPT

Article Abstract:

Delegates meeting to decide the future of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1995 voted to extend the treaty indefinitely, surprising even the most optimistic participants. Also occurring at the meeting was the creation of a periodic treaty review process, and the delineation a set of goals and principles thought to be essential for the future effectiveness of the treaty. These goals include stressing the importance of universal adherence, an emphasis on banning testing, establishing nuclear free-zones and consideration of making the treaty a legally binding document.
