Du Bois and the challenge of the black press

Article Abstract:

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois laid the foundations for The Crisis magazine in 1910. He made it the voice of the discriminated and oppressed African Americans. In his feisty editorials, he attacked the black press for being confined to trivial matters. His unbridled expression of indignation over the injustice against the Black race led to his forced resignation from his post. In retrospect, the views penned by Du Bois were accurate and powerful and if The Crisis magazine today will carry on his convictions, it will truly serve as an agent of change in the African American liberation.

MOSES leads Winona, Texas, to environmental justice

Article Abstract:

Mothers Organized to Stop Environmental Sins (MOSES) is succeeding in its fight against pollution caused by a disposal service, American Ecology Environmental Services Corp. The movement started five years ago in a predominantly black community in Winona, TX, when a group of residents decided to bring to court their grievances regarding chronic health problems attributable to environmental pollution. In Mar 1997, the administrators of American Ecology announced their plan to close down operations in Texas. This marks MOSES' victory in the struggle for health safety.

Booker T. Wahington: the message - the legacy - the challenge

Article Abstract:

Booker T. Washington advocated the importance of industrial training while William DuBois advocated constant agitation to catch the attention of the white power structure. Both solutions, the former economic, the latter political should not be exclusive in solving the African-American problem of racial discrimination. Education, openness to ideas, cessation of name-calling and willingness to help other blacks are also necessary to win the battle.
