Thailand's successful reforms
Article Abstract:
Thailand has suffered serious economic problems since 1997, bringing challenges including high unemployment and a rising crime rate. However, people have not turned away from democracy. The involvement of the military in politics has been reduced, and political activity is now dominated by political parties, although they are still weak. Pro-democracy groups have been able to exert pressure on the government, leading to the election of pro-democracy politicians. Thailand's experiences show that a commitment to democracy by political leaders and professional groups is just as important in the democratization process as economic growth and a thriving business community and civil society.
