The Islamic revolution: from the Shah to the Spice Girls

Article Abstract:

Masoumeh Ebtekar believes that Islam is more of a political religion than a social one. Iranian Pres Mohamad Khatami has issued an appeal to engage in a cultural dialogue with the West. This move was prompted by several false impressions of life in Muslim communities by western artists and writers. Iranians have avoided adopting the consumer culture of the West since they perceived it as living without social responsibility and accountability. Iran still suffers from the economic pressures of the trade embargo imposed by the West. However, a cultural dialogue might help in alleviating the tension between the Middle East and the West.

Third wave terrorism rides the Tokyo subway

Article Abstract:

The sarin chemical attack in a Tokyo, Japan subway, allegedly carried out by the Aum Supreme Truth sect, seems to confirm a growing concern that mass destruction weapons are no longer exclusive to rogue states. The attack offers evidence of the devolution of power and the emergence of stateless counterforces.
