The global politics of forest conservation since the UNCED

Article Abstract:

Cooperation between North and South over forest conservation policies is gaining ground, eclipsing the setback that forest conservation took when the UN Conference on Environment and Development failed to arrive at a so-called Global Forests Convention. However, the pace of cooperation is disappointingly slow and there are international forest conservation issues that still require clarification. Moreover, for cooperation to remain permanent, both sides must be willing to compromise on their concerns. In particular, a trade-off between the North's environmental concerns and the South's economic ones must be reached.

The creation of the United Nations Forum on Forests

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the issues addressed by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests, two entities which ultimately generated the United Nations Forum on Forests, an event which ended ad hoc forest management. Issues the UNFF will focus on include sustainable development, valuation of forest products and forest cover rehabilitation.
