T.S. Eliot Circa 1930: the recovery of the permanent things

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the poems by T.S. Eliot shows that although the readers of his poetry recognize the truth as expressed by him they may not want to accept it. During the beginning of Eliot's career he considered poets as having to act from a gnostic position and express freedom from person. However by the time he gave lectures in The Harvard Univ from 1931-1933 his concept had changed and he considered maturity of response in the readers necessary for the poet to be able to make a significant contribution. His poems 'Ash-Wednesday' and 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' are discussed.

Remembering who M.E. Bradford is

Article Abstract:

M.E. Bradford was a writer who used his gifts of rhetoric to examine the culture of the Western world. He wrote prolifically, particularly in the period immediately before his death in 1993. He was a traditionalist who functioned as a rememberer, particularly concerning the history and values of the American South, the region which formed his environment. Bradford developed his Agrarian-New Critic stance at Vanderbilt University. His writing shows that this position does not reject progress, but it does demand that it should be used in tandem with the highest qualities in humanity.

The scholar as borrower and lender of the truth of things

Article Abstract:

The task of bearing witness to the truth of things has become very challenging in the modern age, in which people demand instant communication of words appropriate to arresting feeling. There are particular challenges for the scholar functioning as both poet and philosopher. The key difficulty is identifying tradition itself in order to protect the elements of history that are viable to a modern concern for a continuing community of the living and the dead. The scholar must act as conservator of life-giving truth to community.
