The "New Criticism" after fifty years: a memoir

Article Abstract:

The return of military personnel to their faculty posts after the end of the second world war marked the emergence of a new form of literary study in the language and literature departments of many universities. John Crowe Ransom named this form of literary study 'The New Criticism,' but a more accurate name would have been 'Formalism.' It subsequently come to be known as 'Structuralism.' It was dominant for around 20 years. There was widespread misinterpretation of the basic principles of the US Formalist movement, and this proved to be extremely important in the subsequent history of criticism. It is possible that a new era of Formalism will emerge.

A return to sources

Article Abstract:

There are a number of challenges facing those committed to developing the study of language and literature in the 21st century. These include the fact that there may be only antiquarian interest in languages other than English. The vocation of the teacher and scholar of language is neither time-bound nor timeless, but historical and traditional. It connects generations by learning the past and then moving on to create something new.

Conservative literary study

Article Abstract:

Conservative literary scholars and critics must avoid the illusion that definitive knowledge is accessible and that totally impartial perception is achievable. It must be recognized that literature gives understanding of people, rather than of schemes of theory, and that literature is always its own best teacher. Conservative scholars must seek unity and diversity and make informed distinctions.
