The Sistani factor

Article Abstract:

January 2005 elections in Iraq, which is home to the country's Shi'ite majority, played out against the background of longing for justice that has deep spiritual sources and more recent sociopolitical roots. Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani exhorted the Iraqi women to defy the terrorists and take up the struggle on behalf of justice by comparing them to Zaynab, the sister of the martyred third Shi'ite imam or saint.

The uses of historical memory

Article Abstract:

Historical memory is the collective understanding that a specific group of people share about past events and perceives as having shaped its current economic, cultural, social and political status and identity. The fact that the historical memory of Iraq can assist in its democratic transitions is not brought to the attention of the scholars and other observers of politics.

Constitution-making after conflict: lessons for Iraq

Article Abstract:

Iraq needs a constitution that can help to accommodate the country's serious internal tensions and contradictions. Decisions regarding the limits and practices of the new regime and the rights and duties of citizens must be taken during the constitution-drafting process.
