The folly of disparaging arms control

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning Jonathan Schell's attack on arms control with the suggestion that it is a failed policy are presented. Reference is made to his disregard of the accomplishments that have been made, and his failure to provide realistic alternatives to achieve the abolition of all nuclear weapons.

Even the last superpower needs friends

Article Abstract:

Sec. of State Colin Powell is wise to re-evaluate the Iraq economic sanctions issue. The US needs more allies in the region to build a lasting peace. If only Powell and President Bush were as open-minded on national missile defense, an even bigger ally-alienator.

Jonathan Schell's Sept/Oct 2000 article in Foreign Affairs alleging that nuclear arms control has been failure is based on some genuine disappointments. However, his call for immediate abolition is unrealistic and destabilizing.
