The new trade agenda: technology, standards, and technical barriers

Article Abstract:

The standards and product-conformity initiatives of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum will promote regional and world trade in an economic environment resulting from the 1994 GATT treaty. The proposed formation of a Standards Experts Group will link member countries and their industries with common certification criteria, which will promote open trade. Internationalization of standards and product conformity will abolish several technical barriers affecting global trade. APEC's initiatives in this direction will supplement the work of the World Trade Organization.
