Towards an intercultural conception of human rights

Article Abstract:

A handful of Asian governments, most notably those of Singapore, China and Malaysia, have claimed the existence of profound cultural and value set disparities between the West and Asia that make it impossible to judge governments worldwide by the same standards. While the Asian values argument may be dismissed as politically inspired rhetoric, it involves a number of serious cultural issues which are at stake. The book 'The East Asian Challenge for Human Rights' provides a number of insights into these issues that reflect their significance.
