Training leaders for peace

Article Abstract:

The most distinctive element of Burundi's transition is the extent to which national leaders have embraced the importance of leadership training as a key to reconciliation and good governance. Burundi may be the first case of a country just emerging from conflict in which key leaders have integrated into their peace process, a national training program explicitly designed to rebuild their capacity to work effectively together in advancing country's postwar reconstruction.

Can Colombia cope?

Article Abstract:

Colombia has the longest, continuous democratic tradition in Latin America, but the so-called second transition to a consolidated, institutionalized democratic regime has yet to materialize. Hopes have been raised with the election of a new president in Jun 1998 in the person of Andres Pastrana. However, Pastrana faces a complex web of socio-economic problems, including an international economic crisis that threatens to engulf Latin America.

Colombia's perpetual quest for peace

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the debates and activities carried out in Columbia with the aim to address the country's peace problems are discussed. It is emphasized that the United States has offered financial support to Colombian policy makers if they can demonstrate positive commitment.
